Louvered Luxury

This luxury louvered pergola creates a flexible outdoor room that can be closed to catch shade and opened for long summer nights.

How it Started

The homeowners wanted relief from the sun and a way to expand the covered patio beneath their existing deck. They were considering either a roof or a pergola, but needed something that could balance coverage with openness.

We proposed a louvered pergola to offer the best of both—full overhead coverage when closed, with the flexibility to open for light and airflow. Because the system is guttered, it functions like a roof while maintaining the visual lightness of a pergola. The design also includes extending the patio beneath the deck and new steps from the driveway, improving circulation and making the space easier for guests to access.

Let's talk Construction

Like most projects, we began with excavation, followed by setting the retaining wall and installing the pergola structure. To avoid digging through rock behind the wall, fence post locations were sleeved in advance—an approach that protects the wall and simplifies installation.

As the pergola was set, we braced the existing deck and addressed a structural constraint: a center post that limited the usable space below. Working with an engineer, we installed a load-bearing beam capable of spanning the full distance, allowing the post to be removed. The deck was corrected for sag, under-deck guttering was added, and the space was finished with ceiling fans, integrated lighting, and a mounted TV.

The end result trippled the usable pool deck sqft with lighting and coverage and gave their guests a path without having to walk through the house.
