Dreaming about transforming your backyard? If you started brainstorming, you’ve probably already done what many other St. Louis homeowners are doing: snapped a few photos of your yard, uploaded them to ChatGPT or another AI platform, and started to see your dreams come to life.
In seconds, you saw AI rendered images of your vision (fire pits, pools, and paver patios) and you’re already thinking about who you’re going to invite over next season. It’s fun, immediate, and creative.
So it begs the question: Can AI replace a professional landscape designer?
Let’s give credit where credit is due: AI has completely changed how early-stage landscape design and inspiration works.
One of the hardest parts of landscape design is that backyards don't have walls. Unlike remodeling a kitchen or a bathroom, outdoor spaces have open sightlines, grade changes, and infinite ways to organize hardscapes and plantings. Visualizing a finished outdoor space is really difficult for most people.
AI bridges that gap. We think AI is great at helping with:
Ultimately, AI helps fuel your creativity when you have a blank slate, but aren’t sure where to start!
Now comes the reality check - the AI generated pictures look great on a screen, but they are not design or build plans.
When you look at an AI generated landscape design, it won't tell you if the spacing is functional, if drainage is accounted for, or how a retaining wall handles a slope.
This is where the difference between a standalone AI image and a full landscape design becomes glaringly evident.
A complete Landscape Design is so much more than a pretty rendering. It’s about matching your design to your lifestyle, it’s about considering your sightlines, and it’s about considering how your family will actually use the space.
This is one of the most important benefits of working with a design + build landscape contractor. We’re not only responsible for designing your project, but we also install it, so we have complete accountability from the creative phase to the last paver placed.
When unforeseen field conditions pop up during installation, that deep design context allows us to make real-time alignment and structural decisions that preserve the original vision in ways that AI technology simply can’t account for.
AI isn't the enemy of design, it’s the fuel. Creating AI images and bringing them to your initial consultation gives us a great starting point to understand your taste, favorite textures, and desired vibe for your outdoor space.
From there, we take your inspiration and create a real world design plan that can be executed on. One that considers St. Louis site conditions, local setback requirements and HOA rules, existing and finished grade, drainage, functionality, and so much more.
So if you want to use ChatGPT or other AI tools to create a framework for your backyard project, be specific, but also use my a few of my landscape design secrets to get the most out of AI:
1. Prompt Intent, Not Items: Describe the why, not just the what. Instead of asking AI to build "a patio with a couch," try "a cozy, private gathering area for quiet evenings with warm ambient lighting."
2. Swap Textures and Materials: Ask the AI to render the exact same layout using different materials. Compare natural paver tones against smooth concrete or synthetic turf to challenge what you think you’d like.
3. The "Flip" Technique (Scott's Secret Sauce): Once you get a layout you like, challenge AI’s layout. If it puts the pool on the left, prompt it to put the pool on the right. If the outdoor kitchen is on the main patio level, prompt it to put it on a lower step-down level instead. Flipping your design will help spark creativity and give you options you likely have thought of yet.
